Goodreads Synopsis: Nell Martin is moving again, this time to the Winslow Grand Hotel, built in 1878. As Nell is settling in, strange things begin to happen. Doors lock of their own accord, writing appears on bathroom walls–and most horrifying of all–visions of a dead boy permeate her waking life. Thinking it was her mind playing tricks on her, she soon finds the past and the present colliding as she learns horrific details of a murder that happened at the hotel in 1905 involving a girl named Lea.

Nell and a mysterious bellboy must relive that day in hopes of finally breaking a curse that imprisons them both. And Nell discovers what truly links her to the history of the Winslow Grand Hotel.

REVIEW

As soon as I heard about this book being blurbed as “Titanic meets The Shining,” I was so so curious about this book and was excited to be on this tour! I hadn’t read the author’s previous book but this was an enjoyable book! The blurb is SO true with a haunted hotel and a historical romance. I totally got vibes of The Shining with the grand, famous hotel and the creepy stuff that happens and the “forbidden romance” in the historical 1909 section. We have a POV in modern day with Nell and in 1909 with Aurelia or Lea as she likes to be called. We switch back and forth between these POVs to see how the two girls are connected and if someone haunts the hotel.

My favorite part was the first about 40 percent of the book. The building of the mystery was well done, showing how slowly Nell gets more paranoid and uncertain of whether she’s crazy or something actually is happening. The author kept the pace very well for the first chunk and the whirlwind romance in 1909 is very reminiscent of many period pieces and YA historical fiction. I also did love the setting of the fictional famous hotel and the descriptions of it. The author chose a great setting in a hotel, especially one with a long history and I liked how the two time periods were very distinct.

But I did have a few cons with the book. I felt like there was lost potential on the hauntings. They didn’t increase as much as I thought; the “antagonist” didn’t do very much. I never felt any true tension with the villain and therefore, there weren’t many stakes with Nell and her love interest. Things came way too easily for them. Thus, I also felt like the romance was too present in the book, instead of being a balance of the horror and also the romance. I did wish the book had about 50 more pages to flesh out a few things in the end.

But if you like light YA horror books, this is a great October read. Also, if you know young teens who love this genre, this would be a good pick for them. This was a quick read that has a very interesting premise that I think will bring many people to it. While it’s not a few favorite for me, I’m intrigued to read more by this author and see what she writes next. A big thanks to the publisher and the FFBC for the review copy!
